Dinosaur Bar-B-Que had been on my “To Dine” list for some time, but for some reason I just never made it out there. (Ok let’s be honest here, it’s because it’s in Harlem, and I just don’t find myself in Harlem very often!) But finally as a friend and I were deciding on a location for our double date, it came to me (and it was a good half-way meeting point since she lives in Inwood), Dinosaur Bar-B-Que it is! It was a Friday night, and they don’t take reservations so we found ourselves waiting at the bar for an estimated wait time of one hour and forty-five minutes! Luckily, they have a great variety of local beers on tap, and a fully stocked bar. I went for the Brooklyn Pumpkin Ale as I love all things pumpkin in the fall, but I was a little disappointed that it didn’t taste “pumpkin-y” enough for my taste.
We ended up stealing a table in the bar area which is first come first serve, so we only had to wait about an hour, and we were ravenous by then! We started off with the Swag Sampler Plate which featured the Spicy Shrimp Boil, Chicken Wings, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Deviled Eggs. I absolutely love samplers because I always want to try a little of everything! I was very curious about the fried green tomatoes because I had never had them before (I know I’m from Florida, but South Florida is not really “the South”). I actually really liked them, I guess you can deep fry pretty much anything and make it tasty! The wings were my favorite item, they were super moist and tender and bursting with flavor. I was also very surprised that a BBQ joint would have boiled shrimp, but they were quite delicious as well, and spicy! I had more than my share of those little guys…
For my entrée, I chose the Tres Niños, a petite sampling of brisket, ribs, and pork – I told you, I like to sample! It was the perfect combination and size, and for my sides I got the mac & cheese and the whipped roasted sweet potato which also came with a corn bread muffin. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this dish, all the meat was incredibly tender and bursting with smoky barbecue flavors. They really know how to make barbecue here! The sweet potato was sweet and delicious and garnished with some spicy nuts which gave it an interesting twist, and the mac & cheese was ok but definitely not the star of the dish.
My hubby got the Brisket Plate which he couldn’t stop talking about, and he really loved the BBQ beans. My friend went for the Brisket Plate as well with the same sides I had, and she loved everything too.
Finally, her boyfriend got the Drunken Spicy Shrimp Boil which is his favorite thing here. They were quite spicy, but he finished them all anyway!
There is no denying that Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is really great barbecue, BUT I still have to stick with Mighty Quinn’s as being the best. Dinosaur definitely has more options, and is a more fun atmosphere, but the quality of the barbecued meat is just superior at Mighty Quinn’s.
