I couldn’t believe it when I saw they had opened a Mellow Mushroom in City Place! This place totally takes me back to my good ole days at the University of Florida. Only back then it was a small hole in the wall cafe right across from campus, and was the place to go for the munchies! The version in City Place is nothing like the one across the street from the downtrodden old Holiday Inn by campus, this one is huge and looks like a psychedelic version of a restaurant in Disney World!
My old boss (and good friend) and I got a table outside to enjoy the beautiful Florida sunshine and happy hour of course. In addition to their specialty pizzas, Mellow Mushroom has an extensive list of craft and local beers. Since I was in Florida, I decided to go for some local breweries. I started off with the Native Lager and my friend got the Due South Caramel Cream – doesn’t that just sound delicious? After my first one, I switched over to hers!
We started with a Bruschetta appetizer which was part of the Happy Hour specials and was half off. It was a really big portion, about twice the size of the picture below, I just forgot to take a picture when it first arrived (as usual!). It was an interesting twist on the Italian classic with chunks of feta cheese. I kept trying to remind myself that this wasn’t real “Italian” food, and not to be too judgmental.
We ordered the Holy Shiitake Pie which consisted of an olive oil and garlic base, Shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella and Montamore cheeses, drizzled with garlic aioli and black truffle oil and garnished with fresh chives and shaved Parmesan. It was very good, and went perfectly with the cool crisp beers. I loved the mushrooms on my pizza, and I am crazy about truffle oil, the crust however was not my favorite, but I have become kind of a pizza snob since moving to NYC. For an Americanized version of pizza, it was very tasty and an interesting concoction of flavors.
A close up for a better view… And between the two of us, we easily finished off the entire pie! We even contemplated getting dessert, but decided to go to my favorite gelateria – Italy (stay tuned for that post!). It was a fun time at Mellow Mushroom catching up on girl talk, sipping Florida beers and chowing down on unconventional pizza, and I would definitely come again (but not particularly because the food was amazing). Maybe next time I’ll come late after a night out, and it will be more like back in my college days!
